Democratic Local Governance

Women’s Collective opposes all forms of patriarchal values within us and would strive to change our attitudes and behaviors to achieve gender equality. WC works for the political participation of women as they have as much right as anyone else to take part in the elections.Gender inequality is not inclusive, not fair and undemocratic. The constitution off India guarantees political equality to its entire people whereas only around 9% of parliament elected resentatives are women. Only 13% of the women contested in 2004 general election were elected.

To enhance this ideology women’s collective started selecting potential women leaders from the villages of Tamilnadu and gave training so that women can enter electoral politics and public life. Women were trained and made to contest for the 1996,2001 and 2006 panchayath raj elections and around 700 women have won the elections.

Women leaders are given training in the following areas :

Gender Inequality and the negative impacts it creates on the development of the country.
Public Speaking.
Electoral practices followed in the country.
Election commission.
Unfair electoral practices
Constitution of India
Reservation policies of the government.
Good governance.
Training on assembly and parliament functioning.
Reading Newspapers and keeping themselves abreast of the current affairs of the country.

Women’s Collective played a very important role in the implementation of the 33% bill reservation in the parliament, since women population in India is 50% ,WC will strive to get 50% reservation for women. True democracy can be achieved only through equal political participation of women.
