Nilgiri’s and Kodai – Rain Havoc and Landslides 8th - 11th November 2009
Pouring rain, gusty winds and biting cold have changed the face of the Nilgiris as heavy rains, which began on Saturday evening, continued their spell, disrupting normal life. Landslide touched off by heavy seasonal rain killed at least 74 people and washed away more than 700 houses, an official said on Tuesday. Low-lying areas across the districts are inundated and electric poles and trees uprooted while power cables snapped. Traffic totally disrupted and tourist were advised by the government not to come to Ooty and Kodaikanal. More than 100 landsides took place in Niligiri’s in the last two days and 10 in Kodaikanal. The access to Ooty and Kodaikanal is totally cut off. More than 1600 Special Task Force, Rapid Action force , Tamilnadu Special Police and Fire and rescue staff have reached the place to assist the relief work. It is expected that the National Disaster Response Force will arrive soon to arry out the relief work.
On Monday Coonoor registering 390 mm of rain, Avalanchi had 193 mm, Kothagiri 270 mm , Ooty 170 mm, Ketti 820 mm , Emerald 112 mm The Schools and Colleges are closed down for nearly a week now. According to the Metereological Department on Tuesday 10th november, more heavy showers were expected over Tamil Nadu and adjoining Pondicherry during the next 48 hours.
Eight members of a family were killed at Manthada on the Ooty – Coonoor national high way in a landslide. Former village panchayath president Nagaraj was washed away in Thengumarahada when he crossed the river.
The affected people are lodged in Schools and Public buildings. The government announced Rs. 1 lakh to be given to the kin of those who died. He has stated that steps had been taken to supply kerosene, rice and other essential items to the affected people. Government has distributed Rs.2000 to 21 families in Coonoor area.
Women’s collective have already started with relief work in the affected areas by cooking food and distributing food to the affected people who are temporally taking shelter in schools and public buildings.
The most important and immediate relief requirement is to provide them with clothes, woolen blankets, food, water, medicines and proper shelter as the temperature dropped down to 17 ◦ and along with gusty winds.
